![]() Sandbar The Santa Barbara harbor has a 500-yard breakwater that extends from Point Castillo into the harbor and creates a sandbar that takes an ordinary swell and, on good days, turns it into world-class waves…all over a very shallow sandy bottom. Located in the heart of the city, the area is called the Sandbar or Sandspit. It is a well-known surfing spot, especially during Winter's biggest swells. When it's on, it's like Kirra. In fact, it is often referred to as the cold-water Kirra. This is why the Sandbar is so well known to advanced surfersThis is how it works: the swell comes toward the harbor from the northwest, west or southeast. The waves hit the backwash from the breakwater and plume in front of some jetty boulders, and then work their way down the line. When you surf, the takeoffs are steep, so you might find yourself in an airdrop. The best conditions produce a wave that is a straight tube. Normally the wave length is 50-150 meters; on a good day, it is up to 514 State St CA 93101 United States Map Other Categories: Night Life » Valley Night Clubs |
