Tonga Hut
Hip North Hollywood locals regard the Tonga Hut as their own private, semi-seedy oasis in the Valley. It's a dive, for sure, but a pleasant dive into a Polynesian sea.By the late '90s, the decades-old Tonga Hut (founded in 1958) had lost some of its original tikiness, and began an awkward decline into a skuzzy sports bar. But new owners did a terrific job of renovating the place, cleaning out the electronic dartboards and neon beer signs, fixing the perfectly kitschy three-tiered water fountain behind the bar, and ushering in a new era of tiki-dom. The Polynesian makeover included, of course, a new tropical drink menu. Those not driving should go for the Tonga Tea, an everything-but-the-kitchen-sink concoction made with tequila, gin, vodka, rum, and a splash of island fruit flavors. Now at the Tonga Hut, a huge Easter Island statue (that's moai to tikiphiles) greets patrons at the door, a TV plays black-and-white westerns with the sound turned off, and an unpretentious jukebox spins The Zombies, Rolling Stones and a fair share of Don Ho’s greatest hits. Somehow, it all works.
