Anyone who has ever wedged themselves in the rear seat of an average modern sedan knows, unlike the great American land yachts that roamed the Interstates in the 1950s and 1960s, there's not a lot of leg room back there. So space is a premium. One needs to be able to spread out and stretch one's legs without kicking the driver in the back.
Then there are the other amenities. Some cars offer rear climate and audio controls, as well as reading lights and even occasionally a seat warmer (people get cold in the back, too, you know). Such features seem pretty basic in comparison to the goodies available to the buyers of the forthcoming Rolls-Royce Phantom with extended wheelbase, which debuted this month at the Geneva Motor Show and is expected to be priced well over $300,000. Here, VIP passengers will be able to enjoy cocktails from the drinks cabinet, access a mini-refrigerator, store cigars in a specially-made humidor, watch DVDs or even play videogames. (Leather and wood trim can also be special ordered.) For more privacy, a division wall can be placed behind the driver's seat.
Conversely, most car companies (with the exception of their minivan divisions) treat the rear seat like the automotive equivalent of steerage class. Banishment back there reveals where you are on the pecking order. This is where the kids get stuck, or the in-laws, or the dog. The irony, of course, is that for a very select group of cars it is all about the back seat. Here the typical social order is reversed.
